How to attract the best talent
A new online membership scheme is being launched by The Association of Graduate Recruiters (AGR) in April in an attempt to help organisations who employ up to 250 staff recruit, retain and develop graduates.

Recent research by the AGR (in 2006) found that a noteworthy number of graduates, following graduation, thought that working for small or medium sized enterprise (SME) preferable to big city firms.

The AGR is a recognised influence for employers looking at graduate recruitment. With over 800 members (including a significant number of public and private sectors businesses) it represents those providing a large percentage of graduate opportunities in the UK.

This year is the 40th anniversary of the AGR, and it sees the face of graduate recruitment changing significantly. It is now apparent that not all graduates take up positions with multinational organisations, and that it is now the smaller companies that need to compete in order to recruit and retain the best talent.

This also means that even though smaller companies don’t have a structured graduate recruitment programme, they are still up against the same challenges as big city firms.

The AGR online membership package for SME’s sized became available on the 1st of April. The benefits will include unlimited access to the summer and winter Graduate Recruitment surveys as well as research from in and around the recruitment fields.

AGR are also publishing a thorough guide for smaller SME’s on how to attract and retaining graduates, this includes topics such as:

- what kind of graduates to target
- how to advertise for graduates
- selecting the right candidates
- developing graduate employees in the longer-term
