“I’m looking for a sales job” the caller said, “in Berkshire preferably.”

“Sales jobs in Berkshire” I replied (discreetly letting out a long sigh), “Okay, I’ll have a look in the file and see what I’ve got”. I’m not a salesperson myself you see, so I find it hard to get excited about ‘sales jobs in Berkshire’. But it’s my job to find jobs for other people, so I ought to at least have a look in the file and see if there’s anything suitable.

Let’s have a look – there’s a few things in here. The old favourites that are always recruiting and never sound particularly tempting: ‘Can you work under pressure?’, ‘Can you work to tight deadlines?’, ‘Do you relish challenges?’ Honestly, I sometimes wonder if they actually want people to even apply for these jobs if that’s the best description they can manage.

But hold on, what’s this…. Just came in this week. “Sorry to keep you holding there, but I think I’ve found something that might interest you – just give me a second…” It seems Business in Berkshire are looking for sales people: ‘Sales Jobs in Berkshire’ it says here.

I’ve heard about this Business in Berkshire before – actually I think the boss has got an account with them and she says that’s how she gets noticed on the internet. She swears by it. Let’s read the small print and see if there’s a catch. It says ‘Sales jobs in Berkshire. Are you looking for a change? Would you like to sell a business solution that has real evidence of its achievements to date? An innovative service, based around the Internet? At your own pace? A service that works for most businesses?’

This sounds interesting (“Yes, I am still here… have a listen to this and see what you think…”). I read out the rest of the job description to the caller on the phone: ‘How about building a regular monthly income stream? Being part of a team that will help you sell more? Others helping you build your business while you help us build ours? Working 2 hours, 10 hours, your own hours each day? Then there’s a phone number at the bottom of the page – 01753-852904’

‘Hello?... Hello? Are you still there?’ Damn, that’s another one put the phone down before I’ve even given them the full details… I thought it sounded quite good too (although I’m not a salesperson myself)….

Meanwhile a phone in Windsor is already ringing…
