In most businesses the vast majority of Sales resources are used to acquire new customers. It’s obvious, the business needs to grow revenue and profit so they have to invest to get more customers. The issue is that not enough attention is given to retaining existing customers. Those existing customers often just slip away without the company really knowing why. Then the company has to work even harder to get even more new customers. Surely not a good situation.

We almost always find that customers have a very different view of their relationship with the company than the company thinks they have. In some cases its minor issues such as how quickly calls are returned. They may be minor in the company’s eyes but they can be enough to cause a customer to leave and often no one in the company would know why. We‘ve also discovered that companies often spend a lot of money doing things for their customers that their customers don’t actually want. One example was the company that delayed delivery of the product to the customer while they took it out of the box and tested it. Customers hated the delay.
